एक बार दुर्वासा ऋषि कुंती के पास उसके महल में पधारे। तब कुंती ने पूरे एक वर्ष तक बहुत अच्छे तरीके से उनका अतिथि सत्कार किया था। उसकी सेवा से प्रसन्न होकर, दुर्वासा ने कुंती को वरदान दिया कि वो किसी भी देवता का स्मरण करके उनसे सन्तान उत्पन्न कर सकती है। एक दिन कुंती के मन में यह बात अजमाने के लिए आई। महल से अचानक बाहर निकलते ही वह सूरज के दिव्य तेज से प्रभावित हुई। तब उसके मन में भगवान सूर्य का ही ध्यान आया। इससे सूर्य देव वहां प्रकट हुए और उसे एक पुत्र दिया जो तेज़ में सूर्य के ही समान था। वह कवच और कुण्डल लेकर उत्पन्न हुआ था जो जन्म से ही उसके शरीर से चिपके हुए थे। वह अभी अविवाहित थी इसलिए लोक-लाज के डर से उसने उस पुत्र को एक बक्से में बंद करके नदी में बहा दिया।तभी धृतराष्ट्र के महल में काम करने वाला सारथी उस समय नदी के दूसरे किनारे पर ही मौजूद था। उसकी नजर उस सुंदर डिब्बे पर पड़ी तो उसने उसको खोलकर देखा। एक नन्हें से बच्चे को देख कर वो आनंदित हो उठा क्योकि वह संतानहीन था। वह उस बच्चे को अपनी पत्नी के पास ले गया। दोनों आनंद विभोर हो गए। उसने बहुत अच्छे से उसका पालन-पोषण किया। जन्म से ही उसके कानों में सोने के कुंडल और उसके छाती पर एक प्राकृतिक कवच था। इसलिए उन्होंने उसका नाम करण रखा।
